The outstanding contribution of peacekeepers from all countries across the world participating in UN peacekeeping operations is commemorated with deep respect on this day

Like other countries of the world, Bangladesh also celebrated the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on Monday.

The outstanding contribution of peacekeepers from all countries across the world participating in UN peacekeeping operations is commemorated with deep respect on this day, said a press release.

On the occasion of the day, the president, prime minister, foreign minister, chiefs of the three armed forces, principal staff officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces, inspector general of police, UN secretary general and UN resident coordinator in Bangladesh gave separate messages.

As part of the Peacekeepers Day program, a felicitation was held for the next of kin of martyred peacekeepers and injured peacekeepers at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Monday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was present as the chief guest at the reception.

A minute’s silence was observed for those martyred during the peacekeeping operations after the reception started with the recitation of the Holy Quran at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. A special presentation on UN peacekeeping operations was organized on the occasion.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen spoke on the occasion. Besides, Bangladesh Army Chief General Sheikh Mohammad Shafiuddin Ahmed gave a speech as the senior peacekeeper. Gwyn Lewis, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, delivered the welcome address on the occasion. Besides, the prime minister exchanged views with the armed forces and policemen engaged in peacekeeping operations in various countries.

Bangladesh Television and BTV World had broadcast the event live.

Members of the Cabinet, ambassadors/high commissioners of different countries posted in Bangladesh, UN resident coordinators posted in Bangladesh, chiefs of the three armed forces, members of parliament, principal staff officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division, additional inspector general of police, senior secretaries/secretaries of various ministries, various UN agencies in Bangladesh were present on the occasion.

Dignitaries including senior military and civilian officials along with senior officers and media personalities were also present.

Earlier, the program of the day started at 6:15am at Old Airport Mosque Complex in Tejgaon, Dhaka and other divisional towns with “Peacekeepers Rally/Run-2023”.

Foreign Minister Momen attended the event as chief guest.

In order to highlight the significance of the day, special articles were published in special journals and various dailies and special talk-shows were aired on various private channels including Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar.
