Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Manipur on Saturday demanded for an NRC like exercise after the publication of final NRC in Assam earlier on the day.

Foreigners’ Tribunals and an NRC was sought by Mizoram’s apex students’ body-Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP)- but said the cut-off year should be as enshrined in the Constitution.

A similar demand was echoed by Mizoram’s NGO Coordination Committee- a conglomerate of major civil societies and student associations of the state.

A resolution in favour of implementing an NRC like an exercise in Mizoram, in fact, was adopted by the Young Mizo Association (YMA).

The Mizoram Assembly on March 2018 had passed the Mizoram Maintenance of Household Registers Bill, 2019.

If passed, the Bill would then enable the Mizoram government to create and maintain a database of the citizens.

Mizoram Governor Jagdish Muki, however, is yet to give his assent to the proposal.

After 19,06,657 names were excluded from the final NRC on Saturday, security in Assam-Mizoram border was beefed up to prevent the possible entry of people from Assam into Mizoram.

A high alert was also sounded in Meghalaya and Manipur.

In Manipur, there have been several campaigns for the introduction of an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for protecting the indigenous people by controlling the inflow of “outsiders”.

Bowing to these various demands for an ILP, the state government passed the Manipur People’s Bill, 2018, which awaits the President’s assent.

A high alert has been sounded in Meghalaya after the publication of the final NRC in Assam on Saturday.

Meghalaya police conducted checking on national highways along the inter-state border especially in districts sharing borders with Assam.

“All measures have been taken to secure law and order and people do not need to worry,” said CM Conrad Sangma.
