Tripura Orders Probe into Dispute with Mizoram over Boundary Issue

The Tripura government has ordered an inquiry into the inclusion of over 100 voters from a village on the Mizoram border in the electoral rolls of both states. The order comes shortly before Mizoram’s village council polls scheduled on August 27. Of the 640 residents of Phuldungsai village in Kanchanpur sub-division, located in the Jampui hill range that crisscrosses the Tripura-Mizoram border, the names of 130 feature in the electoral rolls of both states. The issue is nearly a decade old, according to sources, and two survey attempts to demarcate the boundary had ended inconclusively.

The issue was raised by Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma. He wrote on social media four days back that he had spoken to Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb and SDM of Kanchanpur about reports of Tripura territory being taken away by ‘a neighbouring state’ and demanded that the issue had to be dealt with firmly.

“Traditionally, Phuldungsai VC as a while (despite eastern side falling in Mizoram) has been accepted as a part of Tripura. Hence, the inclusion of the VC and its residents in Mizoram electoral rolls seems to be problematic”, the official wrote and urged her higher official to urgently demarcate the exact boundary, incorporating entire Phuldungsai village in Tripura.
