3 suspected Rohingya robbers killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Three suspected Rohingya robbers have been killed in a “gunfight” with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

The incident occurred in a hill area near Noyapara Rohingya refugee camp around 4am on Saturday.

The deceased are- Nurul Alam, 23, son of Amir Hossain, residents of Block B of Nayapara camp, Md Zubaer, 20, son of Yunus of Block H and Hamid Ullah, 20, son of Imam Hoosain of Block H of the camp.

Confirming the matter, Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das said two police personnel have also sustained injuries from the bullets fired by the Rohingya men.

He said: “Being tipped-off about an armed Rohingya robber gang, a police team conducted a drive in Habib hill area, adjacent to Block H of the refugee camp, to recover arms. Sensing our presence, they opened fire on us, triggering a gunfight.”

“At one stage, they were forced to retreat leaving five people including two policemen wounded. The three injured Rohingyas died while being taken to hospital,” the OC said.

Police also seized four locally-made weapons and seven rounds of cartridges from the spot. A case has been filed with Teknaf police station over the incident, he added.
