Yangon Region Parliament Rejects Resolution Seeking to Impeach Chief Minister

An emergency meeting of the Yangon Region Parliament rejected a resolution seeking to impeach the regional Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein on June 18, 2020.

A total of 32 regional legislators, including USDP (Union Solidarity and Development Party) MPs and military MPs, signed the resolution to impeach the Chief Minister for holding a religious ceremony in violation of the ban on mass gatherings during the COVID-19 crisis, and a budget issue.

The regional parliament rejected the resolution by a vote of 77 to 25.

The Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein and top regional officials attended a religious ceremony at the Botahtaung Pagoda in Yangon on May 24 despite the ban on mass gatherings.
