Extortionist killed in a scuffle with police in Kohima; One arrested

An extortionist was killed in a scuffle with police near Y Junction, below Old MLA hostel, Kohima, on June 23, 2020. A press statement by Sr. Superintendent of Police, Kohima Kevithutho Sophie, NPS, said that an information was received from a trader at Old NST on June 23, 2020, at around 03:30 pm, stating that two local guys with arms were extorting money from the shops in the name of NSCN-K.
The Kohima Police, on receiving the information, swung into action and the two miscreants were spotted near Y Junction, below Old MLA hostel.

The press statement read, ‘Since it was a public place with shoppers around, efforts were made to apprehend the two miscreants with the use of minimum force. One of the officers approached them from the front and asked them to stop and surrender immediately. But instead of surrendering, one of the miscreants tried to pull out his arm by reaching out his hand at the back. Immediately two of the officers took him down and pinned him to the ground and one Pistol was seized from his possession before he could lay his hand on it.

In the meantime, the other miscreant was engaged with one of the police officer. On seeing his friend being neutralized, he became aggressive and confronted the officers and tried to snatch the loaded arms from the officers. In the ensuing scuffle while the miscreant aggressively tried to snatch the arm, the gun got fired hitting the miscreant from the left side of the neck. The miscreant fell down on the spot and succumbed to the bullet injury’.

The deceased has been identified as Khehuto I Assumi, 35 years old, s/o, late. Izeho Assumi, V/O. Lizutomi, PO/PS Zunheboto. Reportedly, he was serving as Lance Havildar in 164 infantry Battalion (Teritorial army) before he was discharged on medical ground in 2019.

The other miscreant identified as Aito Awomi, 25 years, S/o Netoi Awomi, V/O Lizutomi, PO/PS Zunheboto, presently residing at New Reserve, Kohima has been arrested and taken into custody.

As for the deceased person, the SP Kohima said that family members have been informed after observing all necessary formalities. Pistol, magazines, rubber seals, ID card, wallet, mobile phone, passport size photo, etc., were seized from the miscreants, added the statement.
