Supporters of BJP and Tipra Motha clashed in Mandwai Bazaar in West Tripura district on Sunday, March 27, during which local BJP party offices were set on fire. A complaint was lodged with the police station but no arrest was made till the report was written.

“We have filed a case and the matter is being investigated. According to reports, no one was injured in the clashes, ”said Mandwai Sub-Divisional Police Officer Himadri Prasad Das.

The development comes five days after several people, including two policemen, were injured in a clash between supporters of the two sides in Kalshi village in Shantirbazar sub-division of South Tripura district.

The clashes erupted on Sunday in the Mandwai market where the BJP was reportedly planning to hold a rally. The clashes erupted shortly after Patal, leader of the Tripura People’s Front, joined the BJP and said that the motive behind the creation of a larger Tipperaland was a “small dream”. Indicating the remarks, Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Devabarma fired back, saying that if the BJP leaders think so, the possibility of an alliance (for assembly elections between BJP and Tipra Motha) seems dead.

Speaking to reporters later in the evening, Pradyot said the police should investigate and take necessary action. “If anyone breaks the law, the police have to take action. I will not support any injustice anywhere. I can never support any blasphemy. “

BJP spokesperson Navendu Bhattacharya said he had not heard of the incident and would comment only after receiving a detailed report on the matter.

Tensions between the various tribal factions on both sides have been simmering for at least a week now. In addition to the two clashes in Shantirbazar and Mandwai, there have been protests and roadblocks by supporters of both parties.
