Myanmar will take back the members of their Border Guard Police (BGP) who took shelter in Bangladesh fleeing clashes in bordering Rakhine State.

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday said that discussions are underway in this regard.

“Myanmar’s deputy foreign minister has contacted with our ambassador there. They showed a willingness to take back the BGP members. How will they return them we are discussing that,” the foreign minister said.

He said BGP also took shelter in India before. They were returned.

A total of 95 members of Myanmar BGP have taken shelter in Bangladesh amid a conflict between the Myanmar military and the armed rebel group, the Arakan Army, in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

The foreign minister said more BGB members can come to Bangladesh, but the border is secured.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) had disarmed the 95 BGP members and taken them to a safe shelter.
