The bodies of six Bangladesh Army peacekeepers, who were killed in a terrorist drone attack on a base of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Sudan’s Abyei area, arrived in the country on Saturday morning.

The peacekeepers were martyred in the attack on December 13, 2025. Their bodies were flown to Dhaka on an Emirates Airlines flight and arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim, chief of general staff of the Bangladesh Army, received the bodies at the airport.

Senior officials present at the reception included the chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority, the acting UN resident representative in Bangladesh, a representative of the force commander of the UN Mission in Abyei, Unicef’s chief community liaison officer deployed in Abyei, the director general (UN) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the director of the Overseas Operations Directorate at Army Headquarters, along with other senior military and civilian officials and members of the media.

A minute of silence was observed at the airport, and military personnel paid tribute to the fallen peacekeepers with a formal salute.

According to the Bangladesh Army, the peacekeepers will be laid to rest with full military honours following Namaz-e-Janaza at the Central Mosque of Dhaka Cantonment on December 21, 2025. Their bodies will then be flown by helicopter to their respective hometowns for burial.

In the drone attack, six peacekeepers were killed and nine others injured. Of the injured, eight are receiving treatment at Aga Khan University Hospital (Level-3) in Nairobi, Kenya. All injured peacekeepers are reported to be out of danger.
