Tough Stand of Government for the Troublemakers in CHT

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has warned that those making trouble in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) will not be spared.

Asaduzzaman said: “Those who are committing murders, involved in extortion, and shedding blood in the CHT region, will be identified and brought to book along with their masterminds.”

“We have come to know everything and will seek directives of the prime minister to establish lasting peace in the region,” he said.

CHT Affairs Minister Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing presided over the meeting.

Among others, Dipankar Talukdar, MP, Kujendra Lal Tripura, MP, Basanti Chakma, MP, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Secretary Md Mesbahul Islam, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwari, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General Benazir Ahmed, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Maj Gen Md Shafeenul Islam, Bangladesh Ansar and VDP Director General Maj Gen Kazi Sharif Kaikobad, and circle chiefs, district council chairmen, and local dignitaries of the three hill tracts districts, attended the meeting.

Earlier, on Wednesday night the home minister joined another meeting on law and order with law enforcement agencies, representatives of intelligence agencies, and high level administrative officials in the Rangamati deputy commissioner’s (DC) conference room.

The Home Minister said the CHT is a unique place in the world for its natural beauty while people have long been living in the region maintaining communal harmony. “It’s not expected that unrest will be instigated here for a handful of people.”

He said they will take every necessary measure to improve the law-and-order situation in the region following the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “The people of the region want peace; the Prime Minister will do whatever is necessary to maintain peace here.”

Stating that law enforcers are now very skilled and powerful enough in tackling any challenge, Asaduzzaman said extortion and showdown of illegal arms will be brought under control in CHT.

He also said the Prime Minister has announced a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ against narcotics, and the law enforcers are working to implement it.
