At least five people were killed after a landslide struck a madrasa in a Rohingya camp in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar, on Wednesday afternoon.

Five people were rescued alive, while at least 30 students were feared trapped as rescue efforts continued.

The identities of the deceased and the injured could not be confirmed immediately.

The incident occurred at around 1pm on Wednesday at Rohingya Camp No. 5 in Ukhia.

According to witnesses and relevant sources, continuous heavy rainfall triggered the collapse of a large section of a nearby hill, which crashed onto a maktab madrasa. More than 30 children were reportedly attending Quran lessons when the landslide struck, causing the structure to collapse.

Following the incident, local Rohingya volunteers, members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), fire service personnel, and staff members of various humanitarian organizations launched a rescue operation. Rescue workers continued removing debris to recover casualties and search for those trapped.

Authorities feared the death toll and the number of injured could rise as the rescue operation continued.

Landslides frequently occur in the Rohingya camps of Ukhia and Teknaf during the monsoon season due to unstable hill slopes and heavy rainfall.

On July 6, eight people, including women and children, were killed in separate landslide incidents in the camps. Despite repeated warnings from authorities and aid agencies to relocate from high-risk areas, many Rohingya families continue to live on vulnerable hillsides due to a lack of alternatives.
