Mizoram Police faces shortage of manpower, vehicles: DGP

Mizoram director general of police (DGP) SBK Singh has said that the state police faces manpower crunch as new recruitment does not correspond with the number of personnel who retire in a year.

According to Singh, more than 300 policemen retire every year. The recruitment process is not only steady but could also not be made instantly as a result of which there has been a huge shortage of policemen in the state.

Singh mentioned this during his interaction with local leaders of Mamit town while paying a visit to the Mamit police station on 12th October (Saturday). He said that the present strength of the state police is 9,000 while it is supposed to be at least 12,000.

He, however, added that the government will recruit 650 constables after four or five months from now.

Sources said that the state police department is also facing shortage of vehicles. Singh said that the government is taking measures to replace old vehicles with new ones under the police modernisation scheme.

During his meeting with police officers, local councils and NGOs on the Mizoram-Tripura border town of Mamit on Saturday, Singh also said that the state police as well as NGOs and the general public must work together to not only fight drug menace and check illegal influx but also maintain peace in the state.
