Security forces in the early morning hours on 2nd February (Sunday) exchanged heavy gunfire with suspected insurgents belonging to the non-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (or ULFA-I) at Khamdu village in Changlang district in the frontier state Arunachal.

According to media reports, the ULFA militants opened fire when they sighted the security personnel, who were reportedly carrying out anti-insurgency operations, to make a quick getaway into the thickness of the jungle.

Villagers said that they were woken up at dawn by the sound of firing in the distance, and later were intimated about the presence of militants in the area.

Meanwhile, the Government of Assam is reaching out to the ULFA leadership, and especially its Commander-in-Chief Paresh Baruah, to join the peace parlays.

“Around Bohag Bihu, the Government is getting ready to relay rich news to the people of Assam. Eagerly, we await the coming of the recommendation of the high-powered committee of the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. Moreover, Home Minister Amit Shah has also clarified that the recommendations will be pondered upon with positivity by the Centre. Now, I call upon ULFA Chief Paresh Baruah to join the peace talks after the signing of the Bodo Accord, so that peace can prevail in Assam”, Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said.
