An informant for the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) was hacked to death by unknown miscreants near the Naikhongchhari border of the Ghumdhum union in Bandarban early Saturday (13 may).
The deceased has been identified as Johurul Alam, 35, a resident of the Jolpaitoli area in the Ghumdhum union of the Naikhongchhari upazila.
Confirming the incident, Naikhongchhari police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tantu Saha said action would be taken once a complaint is lodged.
Investigations are underway to determine who was involved in the murder and the motive behind it, he added.
BGB-34 Battalion at Cox’s Bazar confirmed the incident through a press release.
According to the release, some unknown assailant murdered Johurul Alam around 2:30am on Saturday near pillar no 33 at the Ghumdhum border within the Bangladesh territory.
The press release further stated that due to the looming threat of the very severe Cychon Mocha, there were no BGB patrols in the area at the time.
Police believe that the miscreants seized this opportunity to brutally murder Johurul Alam.
Locals believe that drug traffickers could be behind the incident, leading to a heightened sense of fear in the border area following the event.
