Karnataka welcomes its first Muslim speaker
In a historic moment for southwestern Indian state of Karnataka, former state minister and esteemed Congress MLA U T Khader has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. This significant appointment makes him the first Muslim to hold this esteemed position in the legislature’s history.
Khader’s election came unopposed as the opposition parties, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular), did not present their own candidates. He officially assumed office after receiving the responsibility from protem Speaker RV Deshpande.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, emphasizing the importance of parliamentary decorum, called upon the new Speaker to discourage the use of unparliamentary language among the members. He expressed concern over the declining quality of debates within the assembly and expressed confidence that under Khader’s leadership, the House would witness a resurgence of high-quality discussions.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar commended Khader for his unwavering commitment to secularism during times of controversy surrounding issues such as the hijab and halal practices in the state. His ability to bring together people from various communities and religions in his constituency and district has been exemplary.
The election of UT Khader as the Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly marks a significant milestone in the state’s political history. His appointment is a testament to the inclusive nature of Karnataka’s democracy and serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring leaders from diverse backgrounds across the country.
