Myanmar junta forces carried out deadly airstrikes on a medical facility for prisoners of war (POWs) of Pauktaw township in Rakhine State, killing 20 people and injuring 15 others.
The junta launched the airstrikes on Sunday at 6:50pm and 6:57pm, reports Narinjara.
The facility in Shin village, run by the Arakan Army (AA), provided care for POWs, inmates, and civilians.
According to AA spokesperson U Khaing Thukha, those killed included prisoners of war, convicted criminals, health workers, and civilians, including children. Among the dead were also senior junta officers in poor health who had been seeking medical treatment, alongside convicted informants.
Eight bombs were dropped on the medical center. U Khaing Thukha condemned the attack, calling it a war crime. “Bombing medical facilities for prisoners of war and inmates is a war crime. We will respond effectively against the junta soldiers,” he stated.
This strike comes just a day after another air raid by junta forces in Thandwe town, which killed a teacher and injured five others, including an imam.
The ongoing airstrikes by the junta in Myanmar, particularly in the Rakhine State, have led to a mounting civilian death toll, with women and children increasingly among the casualties.
