Myanmar’s junta government has requested Bangladesh to send election observers for its upcoming national polls.
The first phase of the election is scheduled for December 28 this year, followed by the second phase on January 11, 2026.
The information was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.
According to diplomatic sources, Myanmar recently sent a formal letter to Bangladesh seeking the deployment of election observers.
However, Dhaka is unlikely to respond to the request, as it views the junta’s move as an attempt to legitimize the military-controlled election through foreign participation, the sources said.
This will be the first national election organized by Myanmar’s junta since the military coup in February 2021.
The country’s state media reported that around 55 political parties have registered to contest the election, with nine of them vying for seats nationwide.
Opposition parties, including Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD), have announced a boycott, describing the upcoming polls as a sham aimed at consolidating the power of Min Aung Hlaing.
