Mysterious package of finely refined uranium found in Manipur’s border town Moreh
News Desk:
An explosive device marked at 99% Uranium found in Manipur’s border town of Moreh today has set alarm bells ringing in the security circles of the state.
After securing the bomb site to keep people at bay from what is supposed to be a highly radioactive material, a team of bomb and forensic experts are at job trying to confirm whether the package is indeed of real Uranium. Security agencies in the Northeast are leaving no stone unturned to ascertain if an inter-state racket is involved in smuggling of high grade uranium from the region.
The uranium package marked 99 percent refined bears the tag of Uranium Corporation of India Ltd that had its regional headquarters in Shillong.
As far as the background of the UCIL is concerned the state owned company had shutdown its operations on August 21, 2018 after facing stiff resistance from anti-uranium mining groups primarily the Khasi Students Union.
The pressure groups had campaigned against leasing out land to UCIL for pre-mining development projects.
UCIL had started mining activities in Meghalaya about 15 years ago but is yet to receive mining lease and other statutory permissions from the state government.
