Mizoram: Drugs, arms worth over Rs 2.21 crore seized, 29 held

The Mizoram police seized a huge cache of drugs and arms worth over Rs 2.21 crore and arrested 29 persons during a week-long intensive operation, a senior police officer said on Thursday.

Mizoram Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) John Neihlaia said an intensive operation was launched from May 28 against trafficking of drugs and other contraband items into the state from across the international border.

He said that various drugs, including 1085.97 gm of heroin, 1,21,800 tablets of methamphetamine, 700 gm of ganja (cannabis), 1,240 litres of foreign liquor and 100 packets of China yeast were seized till Thursday.

Besides, 0.22 pistol with a magazine and 55 live ammunition as well as 47 smuggled wild animals were seized during the operation, he said.

According to the officer, a total of 18 criminal cases have been registered and at least 29 people were arrested in connection with the seizure.

A Rohingya Muslim, suspected to be heavily involved in the trafficking of methamphetamine, was also arrested with the help of Tripura Police and was booked under relevant Sections of the IPC and Foreigner’s Act 1946, Neihlaia said.
