Authorities in Cox’s Bazar’s Rohingya camps are on the alert to prevent or minimize damage from the severe cyclonic storm Mocha, which will likely make landfall on the Bangladesh coast on Sunday.

Medical teams, volunteers and government agencies are ready to deal with any disaster

The refugees would be evacuated to a safe place if necessary, a meeting at the office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) decided on Thursday.

As many as 3,500 volunteers are ready in the camps to deal with the cyclone, and the Rohingyas that are at risk of being inundated by landslides and floods have been asked to remain vigilant.

RRRC Mohammed Mizanur Rahman said the meeting had decided on all kinds of preparations to tackle Cyclone Mocha.

Solid structures including schools, mosques and madrasas in the camps had been kept ready for use as shelters, the RRRC office said.

The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Red Cross, medical teams, law enforcement, fire service, Rohingya volunteers and workers of various donor organizations were also ready to face any disaster, it added.

There could be casualties if the refugees did not take shelter in a safe place in case the cyclone hit, said Md Hosai, a resident of the Kutupalong camp.

Those who had built houses on the steep slopes of the mountains were afraid of landslides, while those in the low-lying areas were worried about flooding, Unchiprang camp leader Md Ali said.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Kamruzzaman said the local administration had been trying to ensure the Rohingyas stayed in safe places within the camps with necessary preparations.

Armed Police Battalion Additional Deputy Inspector General Amir Zafar also said all arrangements had been made to face the cyclone.
