Six people from two families, including a woman and her two children, died in separate landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Cox’s Bazar, including in a Rohingya camp, early on Friday.

A landslide in the Dikkul area under Jhilongjha union in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila left Akhi Moni, 26, and her two daughters Miha Jannat Naima and Latifa Islam dead.

Neighbour Mohammad Rustam said he had heard a loud sound from the landslide in the direction of Mizan’s house. “Upon reaching the spot, I found Mizan’s family buried under the mud. Although Mizan was rescued alive, his wife and daughters were trapped under the debris. Later, the fire service recovered the bodies of the mother and two daughters.”

A local union parishad member, Mizanul Karim Sikder, said many areas in Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila had been flooded due to continuous rainfall.

“People had been warned about possible landslides, but some did not move to safety,” he added.

Mizanul said Mizan’s house was located at the base of a hill. “The heavy rain since Thursday afternoon softened the soil, leading to the landslide at midnight that caused the tragedy.”

Meanwhile, three members of the same family died in a landslide in a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila.

Three houses were destroyed in the landslide, killing Kabir Ahmed’s sons Abdur Rahim, Abdul Hafez and Abdul Wahed.

Abdul Hannan, a meteorologist at the local met office, said 378 millimetres of rainfall were recorded from 6pm on Thursday to 6am on Friday.

The sea was rough, and there was a risk of more landslides, he added.
