The Myanmar Navy has released 56 Bangladeshi fishermen, along with six trawlers, after they were detained while fishing near Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf.

Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Ehsan Uddin confirmed their release on Thursday morning.

According to Abdul Mannan, a member of Ward No. 7 of Sabrang Union Parishad, the trawlers were seized on Wednesday afternoon, around 10-15 kilometres south of Saint Martin’s Island. The fishermen were missing since then.

Quoting the trawler owners, UNO Sheikh Ehsan Uddin said: “On Wednesday afternoon, several Bangladeshi trawlers were fishing in the southwestern waters near Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf. Six of these trawlers strayed into Myanmar waters and were subsequently detained by the Myanmar Navy.”

The six trawlers belong to Md Bashir Ahmed, Md Amin, Nurul Amin, Abdur Rahim, and Md Shafiq (owner of two trawlers).

All the owners are residents of Shahparir Dwip in Sabrang Union, Teknaf.
