Pakistan army chief Asim Munir promoted to field marshal rank

The Pakistani prime minister’s office said in a statement on Tuesday that General Asim Munir, the head of Pakistan’s army, will be promoted to the position of field marshal.
This is the first time a general has been given this position in nearly 60 years, reports Reuters.
The cabinet led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif authorized his promotion, which comes only days after the nation’s worst military confrontation with India in almost 30 years.
It was given “in recognition of the strategic brilliance and courageous leadership that ensured national security and decisively defeated the enemy,” according to a statement released by Sharif’s office.
According to a security officer, the ceremonial five-star title of field marshal typically denotes exceptional leadership and accomplishment during a battle.
Since General Ayub Khan, the then ruler of Pakistan, appointed himself a field marshal in 1965, this is the first such promotion.
The officer stated that Munir will continue to serve as the army chief with the new ceremonial position.
According to the PM’s office, the cabinet also agreed to prolong the tenure of Air Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, the head of the Pakistan Air Force, once his current term ends.
The length of Sidhu’s employment extension and whether Munir’s appointment to field marshal would imply he has no set retirement date were not specified.
In November 2022, Munir took up his position as army commander.
In November 2023, a parliamentary legal reform increased Munir’s tenure from the customary three years for army service to five years.
“It is not individual, but an honour for the armed forces of Pakistan and the whole nation,” Munir said in a statement issued by the army public relations wing.
