A court in Khagrachhari has sentenced two indigenous youths to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of a Bengali motorcycle rider in 2020. The verdict, delivered by District and Sessions Judge Md Matiar Rahman on Tuesday, also includes additional prison terms and financial penalties under various penal code sections.

The convicts, Saching Marma and Ongching Marma, were found guilty under Sections 302/34 of the Penal Code. They were each handed life sentences with hard labor, along with fines of Tk 50,000. In default of payment, they will serve an additional six months of simple imprisonment. Furthermore, under Sections 201 and 394, the court sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a Tk 20,000 fine each, with three more months of simple imprisonment if the fines are not paid.

According to the case file, the victim, Akib Hossain (20), worked as a motorcycle taxi rider. On the evening of 3 March 2020, he left home with his Platina motorcycle (registration number Khagrachhari-H-11-2136) to transport passengers. That night, Saching and Ongching Marma hired him for a ride to their village. When Akib did not return home by 11 PM, his family tried to contact him. The accused answered the phone and said Akib would be sent back the next morning. Soon after, Akib’s phone was switched off, and he went missing.

The following morning, on 4 March, family members searched for him and visited the suspects’ residence. They were told Akib had dinner with the two men around 10 PM and left afterward. Suspicious of foul play, the family lodged a complaint with the police.

Investigations revealed that Akib was abducted and murdered due to a longstanding land dispute. His body and motorcycle were later recovered from a hidden location.

The prosecution presented 14 witnesses during the trial. The investigation officer was Sub-Inspector Liton Chakma.

The case drew significant attention due to the ethnic tensions and land-related conflicts prevalent in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Many believe the verdict delivered long-awaited justice to Akib’s family after years of legal proceedings.
