Army Steps Up Welfare Efforts to Promote Peace, Harmony and Development in Ruma

In a significant humanitarian initiative aimed at strengthening peace, communal harmony and socio-economic development in the remote hill areas, the Bangladesh Army’s Ruma Zone has extended financial, educational and welfare assistance to local communities, meritorious students, religious institutions and educational establishments in Ruma upazila of Bandarban.
The initiative reflects the Army’s continued commitment to standing beside people living in remote and geographically challenging areas of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where access to basic services and educational opportunities often remains difficult.
The assistance was provided on behalf of Ruma Zone Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mehdi Hasan Sarker, Commanding Officer of 36 Bir, as part of the zone’s ongoing efforts to address the needs of local people while contributing to an atmosphere of peace, mutual respect and development in the region.
The Ruma Zone has undertaken a range of initiatives covering education, religious harmony, drinking water and community development, demonstrating that the Army’s role in the hills extends beyond its responsibilities for maintaining a peaceful and secure environment.
As part of its educational support, the zone honoured students who performed well in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, aiming to encourage them to continue their studies and inspire other young people in the area to pursue academic excellence.
Among the beneficiaries was Rabby Bom of Saikat Para, who secured a GPA of 4.73 in the SSC examination. Recognising his academic achievement and encouraging him to continue his education, the Ruma Zone provided him with a cash award of Tk 10,000.
The zone also distributed 300 notebooks among 130 students of Jabalul Quran Madrasa at Ruma Bazar. The initiative was aimed at easing the educational expenses of students and supporting them in continuing their studies.
The Army’s welfare efforts also placed particular emphasis on strengthening religious harmony and fostering a spirit of brotherhood among people of different faiths in the area.
In this regard, the Ruma Zone provided Tk 20,000 as financial assistance for a religious programme organised at Shri Shri Hari Mandir in Ruma Bazar. Another Tk 20,000 was provided to Ruma Bazar Central Jame Mosque for organising the Holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi (Sm.) and Seerat Mahfil.
The zone also recognised high-achieving students from the Hindu community by providing cash prizes to four meritorious students. In addition, another meritorious student from Mualpi Para received a cash award of Tk 10,000 in recognition of academic performance.
Beyond education and religious activities, the Army has also responded to the basic needs of people living in remote hill settlements.
One of the notable interventions was aimed at addressing the drinking water crisis in Lalngak Para, an area under the jurisdiction of Bazar Para Army Camp. Considering the difficulties faced by residents in accessing safe drinking water, the Ruma Zone provided water-supply equipment worth Tk 23,570 for the locality.
The zone also allocated an additional Tk 50,000 for the overall development of different neighbourhoods in the area, further demonstrating its efforts to improve the living conditions of communities in remote parts of Ruma.
Residents of the areas receiving the assistance expressed their appreciation for the initiatives, saying that the Bangladesh Army has consistently come forward to support people during times of need and to address various social and humanitarian challenges in the remote hill tracts.
They said initiatives focusing on education, religious harmony, access to safe drinking water and community development are particularly important for people living in remote areas, where geographical isolation can make access to essential services difficult.
The assistance provided by the Ruma Zone is therefore being viewed not merely as financial support but as a practical effort to build confidence, encourage young students and strengthen bonds among communities living together in the region.
Speaking about the initiative, Ruma Zone Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mehdi Hasan Sarker said the Army remains committed to maintaining a peaceful environment while working sincerely to meet the basic needs of ordinary people in the hill tracts.
“Alongside maintaining a peaceful environment in the hill tracts, the Ruma Zone is working sincerely to fulfil the basic needs of the common people, encourage students and uphold harmony among different communities. Such public welfare activities will continue in the future,” he said.
The Ruma Zone authorities reaffirmed that the Bangladesh Army will continue to stand beside the people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts and undertake humanitarian and development-oriented activities to complement its efforts to maintain peace and security in the region.
Through such initiatives, the Army continues to demonstrate its commitment to the welfare of local communities, particularly those living in remote and disadvantaged areas, while contributing to a stronger foundation for peace, harmony, education and sustainable development in the hills.
