Ruma Zone Sets Exemplary Standard in Improving Quality of Life in CHT

Ruma Zone of the Bangladesh Army has set an exemplary precedent in improving the quality of life of people living in the remote and rugged areas of the Chittagong Hill Tracts by extending a wide range of humanitarian assistance and public welfare support to communities across Ruma Upazila.

As part of its continued efforts to address the basic needs of local people, reduce their hardships and strengthen mutual trust, harmony and cooperation between the armed forces and the civilian population, Ruma Zone has distributed essential equipment and materials among several remote paras of the upazila.

The initiatives have been widely welcomed by local residents, particularly in areas where access to electricity, safe drinking water and other basic facilities remains challenging because of the difficult geographical terrain.

Among the major assistance provided by Ruma Zone was a 20 KVA generator, a 10 KVA dynamo, a 3 HP submersible pump and a solar power panel for the community centre at Arthah Para. The equipment is expected to significantly improve electricity and water facilities in the area while ensuring the smooth functioning of the community centre, which serves as an important venue for various social and public welfare activities.

The Army also provided a 1,000-litre water tank to Salem Para to facilitate the storage of safe drinking water. Chairagra Para received a 3 HP submersible pump and a 5,000-litre water tank, which are expected to strengthen the community’s water storage and supply system.

Similarly, a 2,000-litre water tank and a sound system were provided to Happyl Hill Para. Shukramoni Para received a 2,000-litre water tank, 700 feet of water pipes, a sound system and a solar power panel.

The assistance is particularly significant for communities living in the remote hills, where access to reliable water and electricity can often be difficult. Local villagers expressed optimism that the facilities would help meet their daily needs and contribute to the successful organisation of social, cultural and public welfare programmes in their respective communities.

The Army’s support has not been limited to basic necessities. Recognising the importance of sports and constructive engagement for the younger generation, Ruma Zone has also taken initiatives to encourage local youths to participate in sporting activities.

As part of this initiative, a volleyball and a volleyball net were handed over to Basatlong Para, while Parba Para received a volleyball and two footballs. Niangkhyang Para was also provided with a football. The initiative is expected to encourage young people to participate in healthy recreational activities and help develop a positive and productive environment for the youth.

Speaking after the distribution of the assistance, Zone Commander of Ruma Zone Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Hasan Sarker, said the Bangladesh Army has always remained beside the ordinary people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts and continues to work sincerely to address their needs and problems.

He said the Army has been conducting humanitarian assistance and public welfare activities in various sectors, including education, healthcare, safe drinking water, sports and socio-economic development.

He also expressed the commitment that such initiatives would continue in the future and play a supportive role in establishing lasting peace, harmony and stability in the region.

During the programme, the Zone Commander exchanged views with local Karbaris, residents and young people and listened to their concerns and expectations. Such direct interaction with local communities, officials said, helps strengthen mutual understanding and reinforces the relationship between the Army and the people living in the remote hill areas.

Ruma Zone has also been playing an important role in supporting members of the Bawm community who have returned to Bangladesh after staying in Mizoram. The Zone remains committed to facilitating their safe repatriation and helping the returnees rebuild their lives and become self-reliant.

For families who have already returned, the Bangladesh Army has taken a number of measures aimed at ensuring their long-term stability and livelihood. These include cash assistance, food supplies, corrugated iron sheets for house construction, solar power panels, sewing machines and support for establishing joint cooperative farms.

The assistance has helped returnee families address their immediate needs while also creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. The initiatives demonstrate the Army’s broader approach of combining humanitarian assistance with long-term socio-economic support for vulnerable communities.

Residents of the beneficiary paras expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by Ruma Zone, saying the equipment and facilities would help ease some of the longstanding challenges faced by people living in the remote hilly areas.

The latest initiatives are part of Ruma Zone’s continued humanitarian and public welfare activities aimed at improving the living standards of local communities. Rather than being limited to emergency assistance, the programmes focus on basic services, youth development, social welfare and livelihood support.
