Elected council member Ms. Shefalika Tripura has been appointed as the Acting Chairperson of the Khagrachari Hill District Council, according to an official notification issued today by the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.

The notification, issued by the Council-1 Division of the Ministry under Memo No. 29.00.0000.214.99.086.24-46, states that Shefalika Tripura has been assigned to the role under Section 14 of the Khagrachari Hill District Council Act, 1989, and will serve as Acting Chairperson until further notice. The appointment has received the necessary approval from the competent authorities.

Copies of the order have been circulated to senior government officials including the Cabinet Secretary, Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, and other relevant administrative offices.

Despite the new appointment, concerns have already emerged regarding conflict of interest and ethical misconduct involving Shefalika Tripura. According to local sources, she allegedly allocated 6 metric tons of rice to herself through a ministry allocation—raising questions about transparency and misuse of power.

This appointment follows the Ministry’s decision on Monday (July 7) to direct the current Chairperson, Ms. Jiruna Tripura, to abstain from all official activities of the Khagrachari Hill District Council pending an investigation.

The directive came in response to a joint complaint filed by 14 elected council members, who accused Jiruna Tripura of disrespecting council members, misconduct with departmental officers, nepotism, bribery in teacher transfers, and corruption in bill approvals.

According to the official notice, Jiruna Tripura is to remain withdrawn from all council activities until the ongoing investigation is completed. Copies of the directive have also been sent to the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Chief Executive Officer of the Council, and the Advisor’s Office.

Jiruna Tripura was appointed as Chairperson on November 7, 2024, through a government notification by the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs. Since assuming office, she has faced increasing criticism at the local level over allegations of authoritarianism and favoritism. The recent complaints and subsequent investigation reflect growing concerns over transparency and accountability within the council’s leadership.
