1 killed, another detained during Army operations in Khagrachhari

At least one person was killed and another detained during two separate drives by members from the Sindukchhari Zone of the Bangladesh Army in Manikchhari upazila of Khagrachhari on Friday.

According to a facebook post by Bangladesh Army, a special operation was conducted at 6:00am in the Garitana area of Manikchhari upazila in Khagrachhari district, during which a local miscreant, Ismail Hossain, was arrested with two locally made guns (LGs) and five rounds of ammunition.

Following his arrest, and acting on information he provided, security forces immediately launched another operation in the Shantinagar area of Khagrachhari district to capture another miscreant, Kongchai Marma.

Sensing the presence of security personnel, Marma fired a round from the rooftop of a three-storey building at the advancing forces.

Finding no escape route, he jumped off the roof in an attempt to flee, the Army said.

Marma was rescued and rushed to the nearest hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Authorities believe he died from injuries sustained by the fall.

From the scene, security forces recovered a 9mm pistol, five LGs, 21 cartridges, and 18 pistol rounds.

The body has been sent for autopsy. Kongchai Marma had long been a source of terror in the Khagrachhari region, facing multiple allegations of kidnapping and other violent crimes.

The Bangladesh Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the hill tracts, vowing to continue such operations against terrorism.
