The main accused in the murder case of Inquilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman bin Hadi, Faisal Karim Masud, also known as Rahul or Daud, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison under the Arms Act, 1878.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday by Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mahmudul Mohsin.
The court had set the date for the verdict after concluding arguments on Sunday.
Faisal Karim remains absconding, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Public Prosecutor PP Omar Faruk Faruki confirmed that the maximum punishment in this case is life imprisonment, but the court handed down a 10-year sentence.
He added that the next steps will be decided once they receive a copy of the verdict.
According to the case, on November 7, 2024, RAB-2 conducted a raid at a flat in Baitul Aman Housing Society, Adabar. Faisal Karim was arrested while attempting to flee. During the search of his residence, the RAB recovered a foreign pistol and four bullets.
The next day, Adabar police filed a case against Faisal Karim under the Arms Act, lodged by RAB Havildar Moshiur Rahman.
The case alleged that Faisal Karim was a known armed criminal in the area, involved in extortion and drug trading. He had been leading organized criminal activities including extortion, murder, assault, and land grabbing, and kept illegal firearms for committing crimes.
Following investigation, Sub-Inspector Zahid Hasan of Adabar police submitted the charge sheet against Faisal Karim to the court on March 28 last year. During the trial, the court recorded testimony from 13 out of 14 witnesses.
Faisal Karim was out on bail in this case until November 17 last year. After the Osman Hadi murder, he went into hiding and was not seen publicly. Last month, he was arrested in India.
