Army Chief Holds Bilateral Meetings with Senior Military Leaders of Australia and the United States

Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh Army General Waqar-Uz-Zaman, SBP, OSP, SGP, psc, held separate bilateral meetings with Chief of the Australian Army Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, AM, CSC, DSM, and Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC) Lieutenant General Joel B. Vowell on October 5 in Perth, Australia.

The meetings took place on the sidelines of the Land Forces International Land Defence Exposition and Chief of Army Symposium 2026, where the Bangladesh Army Chief is participating in discussions involving senior military leaders and defence representatives from different countries.

During his meeting with Australian Army Chief Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, the two sides discussed a range of issues concerning bilateral military cooperation, professional training, capability development and welfare initiatives. The discussions also highlighted opportunities to further strengthen institutional ties and expand cooperation between the two armies.

Lieutenant General Susan Coyle commended the modernization efforts undertaken by the Bangladesh Army. Both sides placed emphasis on expanding training opportunities, facilitating professional exchanges and sharing experiences and expertise in areas of mutual interest.

General Waqar-Uz-Zaman also held a separate bilateral meeting with Lieutenant General Joel B. Vowell, Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Pacific. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and enhancing information sharing between the Bangladesh and United States armies.

The two sides also discussed the Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange (DREE), an initiative aimed at strengthening preparedness and enhancing the capacity of participating forces to respond effectively to natural disasters and other emergencies.

The meeting further covered the introduction of training courses at the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT) with financial support from the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI). The initiative is expected to contribute to further developing professional skills and institutional capacity in peace support operations.

The Bangladesh Army Chief and the US Army representative also discussed increasing the participation of US military personnel in professional courses conducted at Bangladesh’s National Defence College (NDC) and Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC).

The bilateral meetings in Perth underscored Bangladesh’s continued engagement with the armed forces of Australia and the United States in areas including professional military education, training, capability development, disaster response and peace support operations.

The discussions also reflected the importance attached by the Bangladesh Army to strengthening military-to-military relations through regular exchanges, institutional cooperation and professional engagement with partner countries.
