At least 13 Bangladeshi nationals from the Gowainghat and Jaintiapur upazilas of Sylhet have been detained by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF).

They were reportedly apprehended on Sunday night from areas near the India-Bangladesh border.

On Monday, the BSF handed them over to Jowai police station in the Indian state of Meghalaya.

Regarding the matter, Lieutenant Colonel Md Hafizur Rahman, commander of the Sylhet Battalion Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB-48), said: “I have heard that the BSF detained Bangladeshi nationals. From what I have gathered, they might have been involved in smuggling. However, no communication has been made with their families or by the BSF regarding the matter.”

According to sources, the detained people are residents of various areas in the Gowainghat and Jaintiapur upazilas. Locals have indicated that they may have been involved in smuggling activities.

Gowainghat police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tofail Ahmed said: “I have heard reports of some local youths being detained by the BSF. From what I know, one of them is from Gowainghat, and the other 12 are from Jaintiapur upazila.”

Abdul Mannan, panel chairman of Purbo Jaflong Union Parishad (UP), mentioned that some relatives of the detained workers had contacted him to inquire about their whereabouts. However, the reason behind the BSF’s detention remains unknown.
