Indian Border Security Force (BSF) seized 2.420 kg of gold bars and arrested an Indian smuggler near the India-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Saturday.
The gold, valued at approximately Rs 2.95 crore, was being smuggled from Bangladesh into India.
The operation was conducted by the 143rd Battalion of BSF’s South Bengal Border on February 14. Acting on a tip-off, BSF personnel from Border Outpost Bithari launched a surprise search in the suspected area. During the operation, they intercepted a suspicious individual on a motorcycle.
Upon searching the motorcycle, the BSF team discovered 25 gold bars cleverly concealed in a hole beneath the petrol tank. The smuggler, identified as a resident of Padamvila village in North 24 Parganas, was immediately arrested and taken to BOP Bithari for further questioning.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that he had been in contact with a Bangladeshi smuggler for the past two months. He was instructed to deliver the gold consignment to a specific location near Bithari market in exchange for Rs 1,500. However, he was apprehended before completing the handover.
The seized gold and the arrested smuggler have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action.
