Khagrachhari’s Ramgarh upazila witnessed a tense and alarming situation today as associate organizations of the Prasit Bikash Khisa-led United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) staged a provocative demonstration with slogans against the army and Bengali residents.

On Monday (March 3) at around 11 AM, a protest march was carried out in the Ramgarh market area. The march, directly backed and orchestrated by UPDF, created widespread fear and panic among locals from the very beginning. The procession paraded through several roads in Ramgarh before concluding with an inflammatory rally.

According to local sources, the event was organized in the name of celebrating the 37th founding anniversary of Hill Women’s Federation (HWF) and ahead of International Women’s Day. However, locals alleged that the true intention was to incite hatred against the army and the Bengali community.

Throughout the protest, participants shouted aggressive slogans targeting the army and Bengalis, further escalating tensions in the area.

During the protest, a loud explosion from an improvised cocktail bomb shocked the Ramgarh market area. Panic-stricken traders and shoppers fled the scene, causing most shops to close abruptly.

Several Bengali residents claimed that the explosion was part of a premeditated conspiracy by UPDF to create panic and drive Bengalis out of the area.

“This was not an isolated incident,” said local resident Joynal Abedin. “It was a calculated tactic by UPDF to spread fear among Bengalis and ultimately force us to leave the hills.”

Sources within the indigenous community reported that UPDF leaders allegedly coerced innocent indigenous women into joining the rally, using intimidation and threats. During the rally, speakers propagated misleading and inflammatory statements against the army and Bengali settlers, aiming to provoke communal unrest.

While Ramgarh police have not yet issued an official statement, sources confirmed that law enforcement has already launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the explosion and the provocative demonstration.

“No one is above the law,” said a senior officer at Ramgarh police station. “We are investigating the incident and will take strict action against those found guilty.”

Following the explosion, fear and tension have gripped not only Ramgarh but also the surrounding areas. Residents have called for urgent and firm action against UPDF’s divisive and anti-state activities to ensure communal harmony and peace in the hills.

Community leaders and ordinary residents alike have urged the administration to adopt a firmer stance against such communal provocations and to take immediate steps to preserve peace and harmony in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
