Army Operation in Bilaichhari: JSS Extortion Collector Arrested in Rangamati

In a special operation in Bilaichhari upazila of Rangamati district, the Bangladesh Army has arrested a known extortion collector affiliated with the Santu Larma-led faction of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS). The arrested individual has been identified as Anil Kumar Tong, also known as Guizza Tong (42), son of Chammia Tong from the local area.
The operation, carried out under the supervision of Bilaichhari Zone, took place on Sunday, March 2, with a special team from Taktanala Army Camp conducting the raid in Taktanala Uttarpara area of Farua Union. Anil Kumar Tong was caught red-handed during the operation.
According to local sources, Anil Kumar Tong has long been involved in extorting money from residents in the area, threatening and intimidating them in the name of JSS (Santu faction). His activities had caused significant fear and distress among the indigenous population, with many locals reportedly fed up with his constant demands for money.
Military sources confirmed that intelligence agencies had recently obtained concrete information about Anil Kumar Tong’s extortion network. Acting on this intelligence, a special team from Taktanala Army Camp launched the pre-dawn operation on Sunday, successfully detaining him after locating his hideout.
Following the arrest, a sense of relief has spread among local residents, who had long endured his threats and extortion demands. Many community members expressed their appreciation for the Bangladesh Army’s intervention, hoping it would pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
The Bangladesh Army has stated that legal proceedings are already being prepared against Anil Kumar Tong, and they have vowed to continue similar operations to eliminate extortionists and criminal networks from the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
A senior official from Bilaichhari Zone affirmed: “There will be zero tolerance for extortion and terrorism in the hills. The Bangladesh Army remains fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents through regular operations.”
The local administration and law enforcement agencies are also cooperating to ensure that the arrested individual faces due legal process.
