In a major crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, the Assam Rifles recovered a large quantity of opium along with Indian and foreign currency in Manipur’s Chandel district. The seized opium is estimated to be worth around ₹2.52 crore, according to a statement issued by the paramilitary force on Sunday.

The operation was conducted on July 16 near the Sajik Tampak checkpost, based on specific intelligence inputs. During the raid, suspects abandoned two motorcycles and fled the scene. A thorough search of the vehicles led to the recovery of 50.5 kilograms of opium, ₹2 lakh in Indian currency, and 1.24 crore in Myanmar Kyat.

The seized drugs and cash have been handed over to Chakpikarong Police Station for further investigation and legal proceedings.

Notably, Chandel district, which lies close to the India–Myanmar border, has become increasingly vulnerable to drug and arms trafficking. Experts say the region’s porous border and strategic location make it a hotspot for transnational criminal activities.
