Following the swearing-in of members of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, the process of forming the new cabinet began immediately. On Tuesday afternoon, President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to the newly appointed cabinet members at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Complex.

In the new cabinet, Dipen Dewan, who was elected from the Rangamati constituency as a BNP-nominated candidate with the party’s electoral symbol ‘Sheaf of Paddy’, has been appointed as the full Minister for the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs. Party insiders confirmed the development. This marks the first time that Dewan has been elected as a Member of Parliament and directly inducted into the cabinet.

In the 13th parliamentary election, Dipen Dewan defeated independent candidate Pahel Chakma by a margin of 169,066 votes. Out of a total of 214 polling centres, including postal votes, Dewan secured 201,844 votes, while his nearest rival Pahel Chakma received 31,142 votes. A total of seven candidates contested the seat.

Meanwhile, Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, who was elected for the first time from the Chattogram-5 (Hathazari) constituency, has been appointed as the State Minister for the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs. He currently serves as Joint Organising Secretary of the BNP central committee. His immediate inclusion in the cabinet as a first-time lawmaker has generated enthusiasm among his supporters and party leaders.

In the 13th parliamentary election, Mir Helal secured 143,965 votes from 143 polling centres in Chattogram-5 (Hathazari). His opponent, Nasir Uddin Munir, received 44,000 votes. After the announcement of the results, Helal expressed gratitude to the voters.

It is noteworthy that Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin, father of Mir Helal, is a former Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation and a former State Minister for Civil Aviation.

Political analysts believe that the newly appointed minister and state minister will bear significant responsibility in accelerating development, ensuring peace, and strengthening coordinated administrative activities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region.
