Representatives from several of Myanmar’s ethnic armed groups attended an event held by Wa officials to mark the 30th anniversary of a 1989 ceasefire agreement with Myanmar’s former military junta. The event was held in Wa State, which the Myanmar government calls the Wa Self-Administered Division, located on the Shan State border with China.
Peace Commission vice chair U Thein Zaw and President’s Office spokesperson U Zaw Htay attended the event as representatives of the government. Major General Tun Myat Naing and Dr. Nyo Tun Aung, the commander-in-chief and deputy commander-in-chief of the Arakan Army, both attended the event, as did members of the Tatmadaw, who are fighting a fierce battle with the AA in Rakhine State.
