The All Assam Surrendered United Liberation Front of Assam (SULFA) staged a four-hour sit-in protest at Chachal in Guwahati, demanding ‘Independent Assam’.

SULFA President Rajkumar Duarah said that on April 14, 1992, the ULFA members had surrendered after they were called on by the central and Assam state governments.

“Our surrendering has been on since 1992 but the promise of ‘independent Assam’ got lost on its way. The government has not yet delivered its promises,” said Duarah.

He added that SULFA had earlier laid down their weapons with a few conditions. “In 1992, we had demanded that Assam should get Inner Line Permit (ILP) and all the cases registered against the SULFA members should be lifted. We had also sought government’s assistance in our employment.”

Lamenting at the current scene of Assam, Duarah said that it has been 26 years, yet there has been no development on these issues from the government’s side. “We have taken up these demands again to draw the attention of the administration.”

He added, “We want independent Assam and this demand will continue across all the districts of the state.”
