The Mizoram Government has asked leaders of the Karchulthal Masjid Committee to stop the ongoing construction of a mosque at Zophai or Kachurthal area along the Mizoram-Assam border, an official of the Mizoram Home Department said 2nd November (Sunday). Zophai is a disputed land claimed by both Assam and Mizoram.

The official said that the Kolasib district SP, Vanlalfaka Ralte, accompanied by the District Forest Officer, recently visited the Zophai area on the instruction of the State Government and asked the masjid committee leaders to halt construction of the mosque on the “disputed” land. The masjid leaders informed the SP that they were renovating the mosque after it was damaged in a blast, the official said. It may be mentioned here that the blast was triggered by unidentified miscreants in the wee hours on May 24.

Earlier, the Kolasib District Forest Officer had asked Assam to stop the construction of the mosque at Zophai in September. Though the construction works were halted for some time, these were resumed recently.
