A fresh controversy has emerged over the use of the term “Adivasi” ahead of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, with allegations that some candidates are attempting to promote separatist sentiments on campus.
Leaders of the “DUCSU for Change” panel, supported by the Students’ Rights Council, claimed at a press briefing on Saturday (23 August) that the country’s constitution does not recognize the term “Adivasi,” using instead “Upojati” (tribal). They alleged that certain groups are deliberately using the term in their campaign to create “a platform for separatists” within the university.
Speaking at the Madhur Canteen, Assistant General Secretary (AGS) candidate Rakibul Islam said, “The constitution clearly uses the term ‘Upojati.’ Yet a group is referring to its members as ‘Adivasi,’ which is unconstitutional and anti-state.” He further alleged, “Through this, they are attempting to provide separatist elements a stage on the DU campus.”
At the center of the debate is Meghmallar Bose, a left-leaning candidate contesting for the position of General Secretary (GS). In his campaign materials, Bosu has written, “There are no ‘Upojatis’ in our panel; we have three ‘Adivasi’ representatives.” Their platform also highlights commitments to the rights of marginalized groups, including women, indigenous communities, and persons with disabilities.
Student Rights Council and other organizations have accused the left-leaning alliance of “unconstitutional word usage” and “encouraging separatism” through their rhetoric.
As per the DUCSU election schedule, the final voter list will be published on 11 August, and polling will take place on 9 September.
