The Bangladesh Army has inaugurated a newly constructed bridge in the remote Thanchi upazila of Bandarban, aiming to improve connectivity and support local communities in the hilly border region.

On Wednesday (27 August), Brigadier General Md Shamsul Alam, commander of the 34 Engineer Construction Brigade, formally opened the bridge built over the Remakri canal under the Thanchi–Remakri–Modok–Likri road construction project.

The event was also attended by Lieutenant Colonel Nur Md Siddique Selim, project director of the border road construction initiative and commander of the 17 Engineer Construction Battalion.

Following the inauguration, Brig Gen Alam visited two army-run primary schools at Kaiton Para and Shalokia Para, where he handed over sports equipment and gifts to young students.

Speaking at the occasion, Brig Gen Alam said the army is working to bring education to marginalized communities in remote border areas. “We have already established two primary schools in Kaiton Para and Shalokia Para. In future, local residents will be engaged in construction projects and provided with necessary training,” he added.

He further noted that the Bangladesh Army remains committed to ensuring security, education, healthcare and overall socio-economic development in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, while upholding peace and harmony. “Protecting the people and safeguarding the sovereignty of the country is our duty and responsibility,” he said.
