National polls: Armed forces to be deployed Wednesday

On the occasion of the 12th parliamentary polls, the armed forces are set to be deployed across Bangladesh to assist authorities in holding a free and fair election.

The armed forces will be deployed as per Article 126 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, said a press release.

They will assist the Election Commission and local civil administration from Wednesday to January 10.

Members of the Armed Forces will be stationed at all nodal points in each district, upazila and metropolitan areas.

The forces will conduct area-wise deployment at the request of the concerned returning officers.

In addition, members of the Bangladesh Army will perform duties in 47 upazilas in coordination with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Bangladesh Coast Guard in four coastal upazilas.

Bangladesh Navy will perform duties in 19 upazilas, including two coastal districts (Bhola and Barguna).

Bangladesh Air Force will provide necessary helicopter support to the polling centres in remote and hilly areas.

In addition, the necessary number of helicopters of Bangladesh Air Force have been kept ready to provide election assistance in case of emergency.

The 12th national polls is set to be held on January 7.
