Rohingyas continue to enter Bangladesh through brokers on border

Cox’s Bazar local representatives claimed there are more than 200 brokers on both sides of the Ukhiya-Teknaf border through whom Rohingya fleeing from Myanmar enter Bangladesh.
During their journey to enter Bangladesh, the Rohingyas first walk from Rakhine to the banks of the Naf River. The brokers wait there with boats. There are also brokers on the Ukhiya-Teknaf border of Cox’s Bazar. At night, they take money and send Rohingyas to Bangladesh.
M Gafuruddin Chowdhury, chairman of Ukhiya Panglakhali Union Parishad, said: “Since the government’s fall on August 5, there has been an increase in Rohingya infiltration daily due to the absence of law enforcement on the ground. Brokers on the border are assisting the Rohingyas into Bangladesh in exchange for Tk20,000 to Tk30,000 per person.
“Over the past week, several thousand Rohingyas have crossed into Bangladesh through the Ukhiya border, with more than 30,000 Rohingyas currently waiting at the Palong Khali border to enter.”
Nur Hossain, chairman of Teknaf Sabarang Union Parishad, said: “Rohingyas stay near the border during the day and enter Bangladesh at night with the help of brokers. The infiltration happens on a daily basis.”
Nazir Ahmed, a member of the 9th ward of Teknaf Sadar Union, reported that over 4,000 Rohingyas have infiltrated through the Teknaf border in the last week. During infiltration through the Keruntali border, he helped arrest over a hundred Rohingyas with the help of local residents and handed them over to the BGB.
Shamsud Douza, deputy secretary of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC), said they had received reports of Rohingya infiltration through several points in Ukhiya-Teknaf. Still, there is no exact statistic on how many have entered so far.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Adnan Chowdhury said that the authorities have received information about some Rohingya infiltrations through the Teknaf border in recent days. The BGB and Coast Guard have been alerted to remain vigilant.
