A Chittagong court has ordered two days of jail gate interrogation of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson for Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagaran Jote, in two cases filed at Chittagong’s Kotwali police station—one for sedition and the other for the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.

Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin passed the order after a hearing on Sunday.

According to Advocate Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury, assistant public prosecutor of the Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court, the investigating officer applied for jail gate interrogation of Chinmoy in both the sedition and murder cases.

After the hearing, the court granted one day of jail gate interrogation for each case, he said.

On October 25, a large gathering of the Sanatan community was held in Chittagong under the leadership of Chinmoy Krishna Das.

A few days later, on October 31, a sedition case was filed against him, accusing him of desecrating the national flag. Eighteen others were also named as accused in the case.

On November 22, another large rally was held in Rangpur under the leadership of Chinmoy, who was arrested in Dhaka on November 25 in the sedition case.

A Chittagong court rejected Chinmoy’s bail petition and ordered him to be sent to jail.

The decision sparked clashes between his followers, law enforcers and lawyers on the court premises.

At one stage of the clash, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was hacked to death outside the court premises.

Several cases were filed against Chinmoy and others following the murder of the lawyer.
